He would later say "He didn't have the highest title in the room, but all in all he had forced down my door more than any other person." Their relationship began in the early 1950s after Johnson, a Texan reflecting his southern constituency, became Senate majority leader and was a key barrier in Mitchell's efforts to win passage of a civil rights law. Throughout that time, despite their strong differences, they respected each other. In fact, it was Johnson who taught Mitchell the importance of counting both Republican and Democratic votes in legislative battles.
